Aziz + Cucher

It was a real pleasure to work with Aziz + Cucher in realizing their impressive fine art exhibition, ‘Some People’ at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Pioneers of the use of digital technology in contemporary visual art, Aziz + Cucher have been working together since the early 1990′s. I designed motion graphics for the multi-channel video installation, ‘Time Of the Empress’. You can read a profile on the exhibition featured in the New York Times here.

Congratulations to my freelance clients, Anthony Aziz and Sammy Cucher, on the opening of their exhibition, ‘Some People’ at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. I’m really enjoying researching the prohibition era for one of my current freelance projects, with Moey Inc. I’m focussing on the process of how the various anti-liquor forces, led by the Wayne Wheeler and the Anti-Saloon League, actually managed to effect constitutional change… and visualizing this process in what promises to be a fantastic installation at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, curated by none other than Daniel Okrent, author of the excellent book on the era, “Last Call”. A rich narrative and a very enjoyable installation concept (more on this soon…) – I couldn’t ask for more!

Back in 2010, I was messing around in the studio with my phone and my camera trying to see what shapes I could make with long exposures. Then I put them on a drive and forgot all about them, as you do. Anyway, I just dug them up and thought I’d put a few of them up here, because they’re fun.

Doug Wheeler at David Zwirner gallery

I was lucky enough to see the amazing light installation by Doug Wheeler today, down at the David Zwirner gallery in Chelsea. I had to wait 90 minutes to experience the installation, but it was definitely worth it. I’ve always looked up to those ‘light and space’ artists who came out of Southern California in the 60′s, like Irwin, Turrell and Wheeler, but most of the time, I’ve just gazed at photographic documentation of their work in books. Just like any artwork, it is a completely different thing to physically experience it with the presence of your body. As much as I did start to lose patience with the wait, I really appreciate how the folks down at the gallery are handling the public. It would ruin the experience for everyone if we were all just piling in there at the same time, and there would be no point in the end. So, if you have a couple of hours free, I highly recommend that you go down and check out this outstanding artwork. I find it incredibly inspirational and I loved it.

Victoria Falls

The energy of this place is amazing – what an incredible force of nature. I hadn’t been here since I was 18 years old, and I always regretted not being able to afford to do white water rafting then. This time, we put that right and it was brilliant! Definitely one of the best experiences ever.

Henry proposal

So, I was selected as a finalist for the window facade project at the Henry art gallery in Seattle… but I didn’t win it. That prize went to James Coupe and Juan Pampin, so congratulations to them. However, I thought I’d put some of the visualizations of my idea up here, as I spent many hours dreaming up this crazy, interactive ‘stained glass window’ system and I hope that one day I’ll get to realize it in some form or other. The idea is basically that a number of super long horizontal, multicolored gels are able to move in synchronization across the interior of two glass walls of windows, creating ever changing patterns of color and light, in response to the presence and movement of gallery visitors. The proposal was given a working title of ‘Hive Mind’, both in reference to the fact that the gallery is located on a university campus, a place of constant thinking, collaboration and learning, and also to the visual design of the gels themselves, which are based on the color and structure of honeycomb. Hidden Life Of Bridges closes

The temporary public art installation that I made with Tim DuRoche closed as scheduled last weekend. I’m sorry to see it go, as I really enjoyed being able to stream the sounds of the bridges live over the web; the soundscape that we created was really quite soothing and atmospheric, especially when mixed with the voices of the bridge staff telling their stories. But the project has been a great success, and has been enjoyed by thousands of people during the month that it was open. The project website received 94,000 hits in the month of September, and the live audio telephone number received over 1000 calls. This feels like a project that was truly public, and that feels great… I want to say a huge thank you to Tony Lester and Garrett Lang for all their invaluable help and also to all the folks at the Multnomah County Bridge Section who participated in the project. Also a big thank you to Peggy Kendellen and RACC for their support and assistance every step of the way. It’s not easy to make interactive site-specific projects like this, and there’s no way we could have done it without your help!
